Travel immunisations

We are able to provide a full range of travel vaccinations and the surgery is a designated Yellow Fever Centre. Immunisations are given by the nurse. Some vaccinations need to be done as part of a course, so it is helpful to plan ahead.

You do not need to be a registered patient at the surgery to use this service. If you are planning to travel abroad, please complete our online Travel risk assessment Form. Please complete this in as much detail as you can, so that the practice nurse can do a comprehensive assessment of your travel health needs and vaccination requirements prior to your appointment.

Please allow at least 5 working days between providing the completed assessment form, and seeing the nurse for the travel appointment to allow her time to assess your particular needs.

Ideally we need to see you 6 to 8 weeks prior to your planned departure in case a series of vaccinations are required, however some travel vaccinations can be administered up to the time of departure and we will try our best to accommodate your needs. Due to a significant demand for nurse appointments we may not always be able to accommodate last minute requests.

During the appointment, the nurse will address travel health and safety awareness as well as administer any necessary vaccinations.

Please note that some vaccinations and anti-malarial tablets are not provided by the NHS and will therefore be subject to fees. We aim to provide you with a breakdown of the fees and request that payment is made prior to the administration of the vaccines.

Contraceptive advice

Milton Keynes Village Practice offers the following sexual health services:

  • Oral contraception (pill)
  • Emergency contraception
  • Cervical smears
  • Coil and implant fitting and removal

Oral contraception should initially be requested from your registered GP. Once your GP is happy for you to continue taking this, you can then transfer your monitoring appointments to the practice nurse.

Coil and implant fitting clinics are carried out on a Wednesday morning by Dr Lawrence.  He is assisted by one of our healthcare assistants who is usually female but may, occasionally, be male.

To book these appointments you need to have discussed your contraceptive choices with your own doctor. This can be done by completing Contact us online. The doctor will then advise you if swabs are needed before the procedure and will generate a prescription for the appropriate coil or implant. You will then need to book an appointment with Dr Lawrence in his coil/implant clinic.

Please note coil removals are usually carried out by one of our nurses in their general clinics.

Cervical smears

In Buckinghamshire, cervical smears are offered every three years to all women aged between 25 and 49, then every five years from 50 to 65. All patients who have smears in the surgery are notified of the result by letter, which is sent by the Screening Department, not the practice.

NHS health checks

Working together to improve your health

Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia.

The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented, even if you have a history of them in your family.

We are gradually inviting all our patients who fit the criteria to H have your a free NHS health check and you will helping them to be better prepared for the future and be able to take steps to maintain or improve your their health.

Why do I need an NHS health check?

We know that your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia increases with age. There are also certain things that will put you at even greater risk. These are:

  • Being overweight
  • Being physically inactive
  • Not eating healthily
  • Smoking
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol

Both men and women can develop these conditions, and having one could increase your risk of developing another in the future.

  • In the brain, a blocked artery or a bleed can cause a stroke
  • In the heart, a blocked artery can cause a heart attack or angina
  • The kidneys can be damaged by high blood pressure or diabetes, causing chronic kidney disease and increasing your risk of having a heart attack
  • Being overweight and physically inactive can lead to type 2 diabetes
  • If unrecognised or unmanaged, type 2 diabetes could increase your risk of further health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease and stroke

What happens at the check?

  • This check is to assess your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and stroke
  • The check will take about 20–30 minutes
  • You’ll be asked some simple questions. For example, about your family history and choices which may put your health at risk
  • We’ll record your height, weight, age, sex, and ethnicity
  • We’ll take your blood pressure
  • We’ll do a simple blood test to check your cholesterol level
  • We can advise on breast/testicular monitoring but no examination will take place

What happens after the check?

  • We will discuss how you can reduce your risk and stay healthy
  • You’ll be taken through your results and told what they mean. Some people may be asked to return at a later date for their results
  • You’ll be given personalised advice on how to lower your risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle
  • Some people with raised blood pressure will have their kidneys checked through a blood test
  • Some people may need to have another blood test to check for type 2 diabetes. Your health professional will be able to tell you more
  • Treatment or medication may be prescribed to help you maintain your health
