Hay Fever

It feels like summer is here with the longer days, warmer temperature and the return of hay fever for some of us.  Hay Fever is a common allergic condition to airborne pollen from trees, grasses and flowers.  If you suffer then your immune system views pollen as a threat and tries to get rid of it hence the puffy streaming eyes and the constant sneezing.

You can get over the counter treatments to help with the symptoms of hay fever.  Your pharmacist is a great source of advice, whether you use the MK Pharmacy First scheme or buy your medicines over the counter.

Here are some tips that may help to reduce your symptoms

  1. Most pollen is released in the early morning 7am to 9am and falls to ground level in the evenings 5pm to 7pm.  Keep house windows and car doors closed especially around these times.
  2. When going out doors wear wrap around sunglasses to keep pollen away from your eyes.
  3. Don’t dry your clothes outside to avoid pollen sticking to your clothes.
  4. After being outside shower and wash your hair to remove pollen or at least wash hands and face.
  5. Use petroleum jelly inside your nose to trap any pollen.
  6. If possible stay indoors when the pollen count is high and avoid going to areas of high pollen such as woodlands or grassy areas.

When should I see a GP?

  1. If you are experiencing wheezing, breathlessness or tightness in the chest.
  2. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  3. If your symptoms are not relieved by over the counter treatments in combination with measures to reduce your exposure to pollen.
